JouleThief

In this project, we will be using the JouleThief idea found on the Make Podcast Weekend Projects video, Evil Mad Scientist website and Big Clive's site.

here are some things you will need:

A ceramic magnet like a Toroid, found on many electical cables.

Some wire, braided wire or solid core should work, for a small magnet, use thin wire.

An npn transistor

a 1k ohm resistor color bands should be brown black red gold

an LED or Light Emitting Diode. Red are cheap, blue and white are less common

Get the toroid. You can harvest it from some junk electronics, like a power supply or computer circuit board. You can also use a ceramic ring magnet.

Wrap the toroid with a pair of wires. Wrap them as neat and tight as you can.

When the wire is wrapped, trim the ends so they are about the same length from the magnet.

Use a continuity tester to identify each of the wires. Connect one end of one wire to the other end of the other wire. Solder them together.
